Chapter 27
I woke Maddie up three separate times over the course of thirty minutes. Just now I was on the phone with the front desk getting train schedules to Château-Thierry. The sun was threatening to rise. It wasnât quite 5:30 in the morning. I heard Maddie finally climb out of bed and head into the bathroom. The trains ran almost hourly throughout the day. The journey took about an hour and would run us less than twenty euros each for the tickets. As I hung up the phone, Maddie stepped out of the bathroom.
She was now wearing a white bathrobe over her gym shorts and t-shirt. She sat down on the couch across from me and crossed her arms. She still looked pissed off. âWho were you talking to?â
âI was just checking train times to Château-Thierry.â
âAnd?â
âAnd they leave almost every hour. We can grab a taxi to the train station and get out of here just as soon as youâre dressed.â
âWhatâs the rush? I need to take a shower, get dressed, might be nice to have something for breakfast.â She stretched, groaned, and rubbed her eyes.
âWhat part of weâre on borrowed time, do you not get?â
âI havenât sent anyone a text message if thatâs what youâre bitching about.â
I took a deep breath. âMaddie. I know you havenât sent a text message. But if they had the information that we were somewhere around here last night donât you think itâs probably a pretty safe bet theyâre checking all the hotels in the area? When they do get to this hotel, and they will, theyâre not going to be in the mood to knock politely on our door.â
âCan I at least take a shower?â
âYou can if you hurry. I plan on leaving in fifteen minutes.â
âFifteen?â
âMinutes. You can come with, or you can stay here. It doesnât matter to me. But I intend to get out of here, and Iâm taking the money. The front desk is calling a taxi as we speak. It will be here in,â I looked at the clock on the fireplace mantel. âIt will be here in fourteen minutes, and Iâm going to take it to the train station.â
âFourteen minutes? You gotta be kidding me. I canât get ready in that time.â
âNot a problem.â I glanced over at the clock again. âI need to get dressed and hurry downstairs. Itâs only thirteen minutes now.â I stood and headed into the bedroom.
âDev? Dev?â Maddie called and hurried into the bedroom. âDev, I really do have to shower.â
âThen you better get moving.â
She shot me a killer look before she hurried into the bathroom. I leisurely got dressed then walked out to the front room and called the front desk.
âBonjour,â was how the phone was answered. I gave him our room number then said, âWould you order us a taxi, please? Weâll be checking out in thirty minutes.â
âBut of course sir. Iâll have your paperwork waiting for you at the front desk.â
I headed back into the bedroom. I dumped the fat guyâs clothes on the floor.
