Chapter 27

I woke Maddie up three separate times over the course of thirty minutes. Just now I was on the phone with the front desk getting train schedules to Château-Thierry. The sun was threatening to rise. It wasn’t quite 5:30 in the morning. I heard Maddie finally climb out of bed and head into the bathroom. The trains ran almost hourly throughout the day. The journey took about an hour and would run us less than twenty euros each for the tickets. As I hung up the phone, Maddie stepped out of the bathroom.

She was now wearing a white bathrobe over her gym shorts and t-shirt. She sat down on the couch across from me and crossed her arms. She still looked pissed off. “Who were you talking to?”

“I was just checking train times to Château-Thierry.”

“And?”

“And they leave almost every hour. We can grab a taxi to the train station and get out of here just as soon as you’re dressed.”

“What’s the rush? I need to take a shower, get dressed, might be nice to have something for breakfast.” She stretched, groaned, and rubbed her eyes.

“What part of we’re on borrowed time, do you not get?”

“I haven’t sent anyone a text message if that’s what you’re bitching about.”

I took a deep breath. “Maddie. I know you haven’t sent a text message. But if they had the information that we were somewhere around here last night don’t you think it’s probably a pretty safe bet they’re checking all the hotels in the area? When they do get to this hotel, and they will, they’re not going to be in the mood to knock politely on our door.”

“Can I at least take a shower?”

“You can if you hurry. I plan on leaving in fifteen minutes.”

“Fifteen?”

“Minutes. You can come with, or you can stay here. It doesn’t matter to me. But I intend to get out of here, and I’m taking the money. The front desk is calling a taxi as we speak. It will be here in,” I looked at the clock on the fireplace mantel. “It will be here in fourteen minutes, and I’m going to take it to the train station.”

“Fourteen minutes? You gotta be kidding me. I can’t get ready in that time.”

“Not a problem.” I glanced over at the clock again. “I need to get dressed and hurry downstairs. It’s only thirteen minutes now.” I stood and headed into the bedroom.

“Dev? Dev?” Maddie called and hurried into the bedroom. “Dev, I really do have to shower.”

“Then you better get moving.”

She shot me a killer look before she hurried into the bathroom. I leisurely got dressed then walked out to the front room and called the front desk.

“Bonjour,” was how the phone was answered. I gave him our room number then said, “Would you order us a taxi, please? We’ll be checking out in thirty minutes.”

“But of course sir. I’ll have your paperwork waiting for you at the front desk.”

I headed back into the bedroom. I dumped the fat guy’s clothes on the floor.
